Robinson Crusoe – Headstones

A York based specialist Stonemasonry and Restoration Company has supplied two Yorkstone headstones for the Robinson Crusoe TV drama currently being filmed in York.

The company, Burrows Davies Limited which is based in Strensall and was established in 1995 by Director’s Mark Burrows and Tim Davies was asked to produce the headstones with traditional hand cut lettering, to designs provided by the TV Company, and to a very tight timescale.

The headstones were then temporarily fixed by Burrows Davies Limited in the Churchyard of St Olave’s Church in Marygate to be filmed as part of the TV drama.

Mark Burrows said: ‘we are very pleased that the production company, Power Studios International, asked us, a local company to supply the headstones for the filming in York.  They needed a stone masonry company that could not only work to their designs and supply the headstones with traditional hand cut lettering in 17th Century style but one that could also work to a very tight timescale to fit in with their filming schedules.  Once filming began we were also pleased to be contacted again and asked to help with the temporary fixing of the headstones in St Olave’s Churchyard.  As each stone weighed approximately a quarter of a tonne they therefore required the specialist handling techniques employed by our experienced team of stonemasons’.
